Last April, I participated in this vintage bike event in Paso Robles, California. L’Eroica (meaning heroic) events started in 1997 in Sienna Italy. In 2019 there will be nine such events around the world with the one in California being the only one in North America. The bikes are required to be vintage, pre-1987 and meet certain criteria. I have such a bike, so I thought, ‘why not’.
I imagined a gentle ride through the vine growing hills of southern California stopping in for samples at selected vineyards or enjoying the views from the coastal road. Of course, I missed the meaning of the event’s title, ignored that much of the surface was gravel and was completely ignorant about features such as Kiler Pass that climbs 300m in 5km with pitches of 13% on loose gravel.
In my presentation I’ll go over the pleasures and the challenges of this event.
A pleasant ride through a California vineyard!
Please join us at the HMCS Bytown Officers' Mess (Crow's Nest), to see Byron's California bicycle touring experience. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation will start at about 7:30 p.m.. Look for the anchor on the lawn directly across the street from the south entrance of Ottawa City Hall on Lisgar Avenue. There is a cash bar to boot, and Door Prizes! Let's hope to see you there. Note: there is limited free parking on the east side of the building. Get there early for a spot.
